Drone Component Selection

Choose drone electronic components as a connected system. The firmware, power source, board outline and interfaces place constraints on one another. A faster MCU or a smaller sensor is useful only when it fits the complete design.

MCU and sensor selection

Start with the intended firmware and confirm support for the MCU and sensor families before committing to the schematic. Map timers, DMA, SPI, UART, USB, ADC and debug pins. Record which resources are shared, which are reserved and which are required for future features.

For an IMU, compare supply and I/O voltage, interface timing, measurement range, noise and mechanical guidance in the current datasheet. Consider how mounting stress, vibration and regulator noise will be evaluated. Do not choose a footprint without checking the sensor orientation and supported driver configuration.

Power, batteries and ESCs

Separate battery-input limits from regulated logic rails. Conventional LiPo cell count is a starting input, not the maximum transient voltage. Include connector behavior, wiring inductance and load changes when determining protection and rating margins.

ESC component selection involves switching losses, gate drive, layout inductance and heat flow. A MOSFET headline current rating is not a board-level continuous-current rating. Establish the operating conditions and validate the assembly thermally.

Radio, navigation and payload interfaces

List every peripheral with its supply, peak load, connector pinout, signaling level and firmware interface. GNSS, receivers, video equipment and companion computers may each need dedicated resources. Confirm startup and shutdown behavior, not just steady operation.

Use a selection record

For each critical part, retain the exact part number, datasheet revision, selection rationale, approved alternatives and validation method. This makes procurement substitutions and future redesigns reviewable.
