Drone PCB Manufacturing

A successful drone PCB order begins with a clear fabrication brief. Flight controllers, ESCs and payload boards share a manufacturing process, but their routing density, current paths and mechanical constraints can be very different.

Define what the board must do

Document the board envelope, mounting holes, connector clearances, battery range and expected environment. Identify whether power flows through the PCB or arrives at separate ESCs. A flight-controller signal board and a high-current power distribution board should not inherit the same copper assumptions.

Build the fabrication package

Deliverable What to make explicit
Layer and drill data All copper, mask, legend, outline and drill files with an unambiguous revision.
Fabrication drawing Finished board dimensions, thickness, tolerances, hole details and special notes.
Stack-up Layer order, reference planes, copper requirements and agreed material properties.
Electrical requirements Any controlled impedance, isolation spacing and electrical test requirements.
Surface finish The selected finish and its relationship to component assembly and storage.

Review before releasing

Check that the outline closes, mounting holes match the mechanical model and copper-to-edge spacing reflects the manufacturing process. Use the actual manufacturer’s capability limits for trace widths, annular rings and drilled holes. Minimum advertised capability is not automatically the best production design rule.

Ask for clarification of substitutions and exceptions before the order proceeds. Archive the agreed stack, fabrication data and review responses with the design revision. Changes made during manufacture need to be visible to the engineer who validates the assembled board.

What changes the cost?

Board area, quantity, layer count, material, copper, holes, finish, electrical testing and delivery requirements all affect the quotation. Compare like-for-like packages. A low bare-board price says little about the completed system cost if it excludes assembly, components or test work.
